How to Take Charge of Your Life in 5 Steps

In 2002, I was declined income protection insurance, because I was diagnosed as clinically obese, hypertensive and had a family history of heart disease. According to the actuaries, I was the person most likely to drop dead in the room!

When I spoke to my doctor about this, his gave me two options to consider:

  1. A lifetime on medications (which he did not recommend) or
  2. To lose weight

When I quizzed him about the second option, and asked him for his opinion on how to lose weight, he simply shrugged his shoulders and said, “How should I know – I’m only a doctor!”
I have to say that his reply did not inspire me.

In the end, I did my own research and found a program that I was able to start on the 2nd of January, 2003. I managed to lose 25kgs in just 3 months and for the most part, I’ve kept it off since then
.
I say this not to impress you, but to impress upon you that I discovered a 5 step process that helped me to take charge of my life. I’ve subsequently applied this to my business and now to my clients to enable them to take charge of their environments as well.

I have summarised this 5 step process as the ‘5 x SHUN™’ system. Here it is in a nutshell:

1) Informa-SHUN™

Whatever the topic, you can find information ad nausea. In my case, everywhere I looked I found information about obesity – on the TV, in the newspaper, on-line or on the radio. The trouble with information is that it is pure raw data, meaningless unless you get your 2nd SHUN™.

2) Revela-SHUN™

Revelation is when you get your ‘AHA’ moment! We all get them sooner or later. The challenge is what do we do with them? Please, do not become like Bill Murray’s character in the film ‘Groundhog Day’ where he relives his ‘AHA’ moment day after day. Once you get your revelation, make sure that you capitalise on it and make it count. And that involved a deliberate transition into the 3rd SHUN™.

3) Ac-SHUN™

It’s very difficult to move a parked car. That’s why I recommend that you get into action as quickly as possible. I could have procrastinated about starting my weight-loss program, siting issues such as the time of year, the availability of food items etc. But I believe that it was my immediate action that led to my successful weight loss.

It is at this point in the process that most people fail. They don’t take immediate action and they wait for the 4th SHUN™ to appear.

4) Motiva-SHUN™

Don’t wait for motivation to kick in before you get into action. It’s like waiting for the planets to align or the perfect storm to appear. It won’t happen! If you’re waiting for the motivation to appear, you could be waiting a long time. You risk the chance of losing the momentum that your revelation can give you. Get into action as soon as you can and the motivation will follow. And one of the best ways to make sure that motivation to keep going is there is by implementing the 5th SHUN™.

5) Celebra-SHUN™ This is my favourite SHUN™!

I think that it is vastly underrated and needs more attention. Remember to have celebrations along the way – even for the smallest of wins. If you take action, you will see a positive result – no matter how small.
At first glance, you may think that it is insignificant. For example, losing 100 grams doesn’t sound like much, but an accumulation of 10 x 100 grams lost equates to 1 kg. In the bigger scheme of things, it may not look as impressive as a 25kg weight loss, but at the start of the journey, it is well worth the celebration! It can become the difference between continuing to your successful conclusion or quitting too early on your dream.

So, if you want to take charge of your life, follow this 5 x SHUN™ system and use it to help you take control of the outcome of your life.
